Between Batch Protocol

Between Batch Protocol (BBP) is a profile that is running automatically between batches if enabled. Its purpose is to stabilize the temperature in the machine so your starting point will be the same for each batch. This will improve accuracy between batches. A BBP profile overrides the preheat or waiting temperature and is primarily made for inlet and power profiles, but can be used for air and bean temperature profiles for additional accuracy.

Creating a bbp profile

In your profile creation menu, you will see a new element under your assigned profiles; Between batch protocol. You can see your active BBP profile (if you have one) and create a new one by clicking on the + sign to the far right. There can only be one BBP profile active, other profiles you have created will appear underneath the roasting profiles.

Creating a BBP profile works the same way as creating a roasting profile, except for the parameters you can alter are fewer:

There are two different profile types you can create: air temperature and power. Here you can vary the graph in the same way as when creating a roasting profile. The profile has a timer that will signal on your machine’s touchscreen when the end condition has been met: Either after a certain time has passed or a certain drum temperature has been reached. For both power and air temperature the fan setting can also be altered in profile creation.

When you have created a BBP profile, go back to the profiles page, and assign it as you normally would with a roasting profile, and it will appear in the Between batch protocol section. If you forget to assign your BBP profile, you will get an error message when trying to download it to your machine (saying “Bad server response”).

On your touchscreen:

BBP will be available through firmware update v18.1.6.

Next to “PROFILES”, a new button has appeared. Tap it to download your BBP profile.

The first time you go into this menu, there will be no profile here, so tap “DOWNLOAD”. BBP will be disabled after you download the new profile.

When you tap the profile, an “ENABLED” icon appears in the upper right corner. BBP will now be activated.

When your batch is finished, BBP will take over. Depending on whether you chose the end condition to be drum temperature or total time, the BBP will look like this on your front main menu:

BBP with drum temperature end condition. The timer will run until you encounter the desired drum temperature.

BBP with total time end condition. The timer will run until the desired total time has elapsed.

When the end condition has been reached, BBP will notify you with an on-screen message and an alarm. At this point, you can charge the beans for your next batch immediately and the message will go away.

If you ignore or tap the message away, the timer will continue to run, and unless the drum temperature has reached its equilibrium state, it will continue to drop.

Different ways of using BBP:

  • A profile where the timer goes off after reaching a certain drum temperature, usually a shorter BBP. For example, an air temperature of 200 or 220 degrees Celsius is recommended for a drum temperature of 160 degrees Celcius. Keep in mind that the drum temperature can still drop after reaching the target, depending on the air temperature of the BBP profile.

  • A longer BBP based on air temperature. If you, for instance, have a BBP based on 220 degrees Celcius over a longer period, the drum temperature will eventually stabilize at a temperature around 146 degrees.

  • The customer is urged to experiment and test different combinations to see what works best for their roasting style.

Things to keep in mind:

  • You can only base the profile on a falling drum temperature, and not a rising one. This means that the first time you roast a batch after heating your roaster, BBP will not work, it will only start after running the first batch. If you wish, you can run a heating profile (a profile with no beans) where the drum temperature ends up higher than your target.

  • It’s not possible for the profile to hold a drum temperature once it reaches it. After the end condition has been reached, the drum temperature can continue to fall if it has not reached an equilibrium state.

  • If you set the drum temperature end condition to lower than your profile air temperature allows, the BBP end condition won’t be reached.

  • The drum temperature will drop until it reaches equilibrium regardless of your BBP profile, so for an accurate between-batch protocol; load the next batch as soon as the timer goes off.

  • BBP will not be activated if you discharge the beans and end the roast session using the drop handle.
