Ian is a multi-award-winning barista with a number of national championship crowns, including 2023 UK Barista Champion, 2024 Irish Barista Champion, 6th place at the 2024 World Barista Championship, and 2024 World Espresso Champion.

Ian Kissick, Founder and Managing Director of Formative Coffee
Ian Kissick is an award-winning barista and the founder of Formative Coffee, an espresso bar and roastery based in London. A Northern Irish native, he moved to London to study computer science before discovering a deep passion for coffee. After transitioning from a career in IT, he launched Formative in March 2019. Under Ian’s leadership, Formative quickly gained acclaim: it was runner-up for “World’s Best New Café” in the Sprudge Awards, and Ian personally earned titles such as 2023 UK Barista Champion, 2024 Irish Barista Champion, 6th place at the 2024 World Barista Championship, and 2024 World Espresso Champion.

Formative Coffee, founded in March 2019, has quickly become one of London’s most celebrated specialty coffee destinations. Housed in a minimalist, light-filled space, the bar focuses on a concise, flavour-first menu. They were runner-up in Sprudge’s “World’s Best New Café” in their first year, and began roasting their own coffee in 2022, and starting to supply some of the UK’s leading cafes in 2025.
